Are you laid off and don't know where to turn? Do you keep getting turned down for jobs because you don't have any special training? Are you not the type of person to go to college but still want to make a good living? Oil rigs are hiring. In fact there are more oil rig jobs than there are applicants, if you know where to look.
Did you know that most of the big oil companies don't do the actual drilling for oil themselves? They hire private contractors like Haliburton to actually do the work. That's the mistake most people make when applying for oil rig jobs. They apply at the wrong companies. Big companies like Exxon may have online applications, but they rarely have entry level positions because those positions are employed by the contractors.
So how do you find the contractors who hire the oil rig workers? You can spend hours doing research on the Internet but still wont know if the companies you come up with are hiring. Then you'll have to contact them one-by-one to see if they have any job openings. Some people will actually call the companies but most will send an email and lie to themselves that they really have tried to find a job. Most of the companies you come up with probably won't have oil rig jobs for workers with no experience because you'll most likely be thinking of only the big companies. Remember, the actual work on the rig is done by contractors. If you can't find them, you'll be wasting your time. Probably the only thing you will accomplish is to become more frustrated than you already are.
So here is a basic formula for finding your first job on an oil rig. There are various general employment sites on the Internet that have job listings. Companies pay a fee of about $100 per week to list their job openings for 14 days. Or they can pay $650 to search resumes of people looking for work. The problem is you will be competing with thousands of people from all over the world who also use the website. But more than that, an entry level general laborer position doesn't have a lot of requirements beyond being in good physical condition. Why would a company pay over $500 to find general laborers?
The answer is they won't. They wait for people to call them.
There are employment websites that specialize in oil rig work. They will allow you to post your resume for free. They also charge companies for access to their resume database. There is a chance they will see your resume and offer you a job if you have experience, but usually they are looking for experienced help. But the best way is to be a little more pro-active. Take your future into your own hands.
You need to call the employers who have openings yourself.
There is an oil rig employment site will blast your resume to over 1200 oil companies in their database for a small fee. If any of the 1200 companies has a job opening, it is likely they will see your resume. For someone with no experience in oil work, it is pretty hit or miss.
Some websites have employees that call all the oil companies in the database and ask if they have any openings. They list the openings in a weekly newsletter. In most cases, all you need to do is to call the employer. This is the most effective way to get a job. Calling the employer shows that you are a go getter. You don't wait for things to happen. You go out and do it yourself. This is the kind of employee most companies are looking for. This will start the ball rolling. They will tell you what the next step is. They may ask you to come in for an interview or they may ask you to fax documents. Its as easy as that.
I recommend you apply at many companies at the same time. Some will have already filled the opening and others may be looking for future jobs that are several months away. If you get more than one offer, you can choose the best. Wages and conditions may vary. All will provide meals and a place to sleep. Many will include a plane ticket to and from your home. Its all part of the perks working for companies that are awash in profits.
